The holidays are a wonderful time to give back to the community and to those less fortunate than you. Whether this means that you volunteer your time at the local food bank or decide to help others who may have gone through the same struggle as you, connect with others this holiday season. Since you’ve already recovered from your alcohol addiction, sharing that same strength with others who may still be struggling is another great way to give back this season. Inspiring others will help inspire you to continue along the same sober pathway. There are a million different ways that you can give back, pay it forward and help spread holiday cheer through that.
Practice Self Care
While we love the holiday season, it can also be an extremely exhausting time. From all the holiday get-togethers and cookie exchanges to the endless shopping and driving around town, it’s important that you take care of yourself. Many of us tend to wear ourselves down so that we can get things done for other people, but we can’t be at our best for others if we’re not taking care of ourselves.
Self-care isn’t just lighting a candle and taking a bath. It’s different for everyone. Some easy ways to practice self-care during this busy time is to cook yourself a home-cooked meal, prioritize sleep, and exercise. We know that you’re extremely busy but something as simple as a 20 minute walk around the block is a great way to disconnect from the stress around you. Self-care may even mean that you decide to skip out on the holiday work event and spend time with your family instead. Prioritize yourself this season, it truly is the gift that keeps on giving.
Create New Traditions
Now that you’re living a sober lifestyle, you may not be able to partake in some of the traditions that you once did. Celebrate the fact that you’re re-establishing your own life and that you’re choosing a healthier and better lifestyle. These new traditions can be things such as:
- Driving around the neighborhoods with family looking at all the Christmas lights.
- Sitting in front of the tree while drinking hot chocolate.
- Baking Christmas cookies.
- Hosting a holiday get-together with other sober friends.
- And more!
Bring Your Own Drink
Just because you are not drinking alcohol does not mean that you have to avoid any social gatherings that may have alcohol. Bring your own drink to the party instead. Packing some sparkling juice, seltzers, or soda is a great way to have something in hand. Even though we know you’re fully able to say no to drinking alcohol, it is a great way to prevent other people from approaching you and offering you a drink. If you can’t bring in your own drinks, all bars have non-alcoholic drinks that you can order too.
Understand Your Own Strength
Now that you’re living a life that is free of alcohol, it’s important that you understand your own strength. Even though you know that you have the full capability and control over your drinking, knowing that this time of year can be surrounded by alcohol may leave you feeling slightly anxious.
